World of Warcraft

May 8th, 2008

As the title suggests it deals with the game Warcraft, but is not an RTS (Real Time Strategy) but a MMORPG (Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game). The game deals with the warcraft story line and allows players to play many races and different classes, and also requires a monthly fee of $15. Some classes seem more overpowered than others while leveling, but at end game they seem to even out and develop their roles in Raiding and Pvping.

The raid aspect of the games is very time consuming taking up many hours just to clear one raid instance. While raiding you are teamed up with either 24 others or 9 others making up the 25-man raids and the 10 man raids. Zul’Aman is an example of a 10 man and Black Temple being an example of a 25 man. Raids require alot of teamwork and time. For the most part you have to be in a guild with quite a few people to get this done. May not be something for a casual gamer.

The pvp area of the game does allow for casual gameplay due to the fact you buy gear with arena points or honor. You gain honor by doing battlegrounds and killing other players. Arena points are gained through arena. Although blizzard seems to be trying to push pvpers into arena to get their gear, there are still some rewards without it. I personally think that blizzard is trying too hard to force arena upon players by adding personal arena ratings to items bought with honor. I like pvping in a bigger area instead of being in a closed space where you don’t have many options.

Overall the game is excellent and setting a standard for all future MMOs, and will continue to be the most popular MMORPG on the market for quite some time.

Ventrilo

May 8th, 2008

Ventrilo is hands down the best VOIP product on the internet. Unlike teamspeak it is very professional, lagless, and the voice qualities are extremely good quality. Like many other programs of this kind you can bind a key to talk. Me and many of my friends use this to communicate when doing dungeon runs in mmo’s, playing our favorite first person shooters or when we just want to hang around and chat. www.ventrilo.com even offers a free download of the server software allowing the host up to 8 user slots. As your community grows you can either buy a license from Flagship Industries (provided you have a valid business license in your state) or rent a ventrilo server, some as low as 7 dollars a month for 15 player slots. You also have the option to place items in your “comment” where other users can access links, read, etc in less than milliseconds, there really is no wait when using any of Ventrilo’s features on a good server. Also, the server itself runs completely off of the command prompt or dos so it uses virtually no processes or memory, great for the everyday gamer hosting off of his machine. Ventrilo is definetely a must have for any true gamer.

Team Fortress 2

May 7th, 2008

Team Fortress 2. The name pretty much says itself, it is a game in a large series. It is the predecessor of both team fortress and team fortress classic so it has a great name to live up to. Fortunately for tf2 it doesn’t just live up to its name, it goes above an beyond. It is the fps of the year in my opinion. There are several different classes for the player to choose from. You can be a medic to heal your teammates, a spy to disguise as your opponents and stab them in the back, or one of my personal favorites you can be a Heavy Weapons Guy. An HW is the tank of any team weighing in at probably 400 pounds and weilding a massive mini-gun in order to run down opponents. I recently purchased the game after they gave away a free weekend, i fell in love with it and bought it as soon as the free trial ended. Since then i’ve been obsessed with it joining my many friends who play the game, working to get achievements, cap the points on the map, and overall try to dominate every one in your path. This game is exhilirating! If you don’t have this game already then you should get it. Visit www.steampowered.com

Enjoy
